Ben Shahn &amp; a Woman Watercolor Painting by Mariko Irie<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This scene is in San Diego Art Museum in Balboa Park.<\/p>\n<p>They do excellent shows and have great collections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love Ben Shahn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ink drawing since when I was an Art University student.<\/p>\n<p>And I had never seen his original paintings till I saw this painting at the museum. What I had seen were cover of books or posters. I was so fascinated his lines and interesting images.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mariko-irie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ben-Shahn-Poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-447\" alt=\"Ben Shahn Poster\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mariko-irie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Ben-Shahn-Poster-199x300.jpg\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After I painted this painting \u00e2\u20ac\u0153 Ben Shahn &amp; a Woman\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, I wanted to know about him. So I searched in Internet.<\/p>\n<p>I found that he was very involved politics as a human being.<\/p>\n<p>This YouTube is a good one to watch getting know him.<\/p>\n<p><b>Art as Activism: The Compelling Paintings of Ben Shahn<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L24lrWVNVRo\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L24lrWVNVRo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also did a series, called\u00c2\u00a0<b>Lucky Dragon<\/b>, about the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Daigo Fukury\u00c5\u00ab Maru\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daigo_Fukury%C5%AB_Maru\">Daigo Fukury\u00c5\u00ab Maru<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(literally,\u00c2\u00a0<i>Lucky Dragon No. 5<\/i>), the Japanese fishing boat caught in the\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Bikini Atoll\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bikini_Atoll\">Bikini Atoll<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Hydrogen bomb\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_bomb\">hydrogen bomb<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0blast.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2012, an important part of this series is in the collections of\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fukushima_Prefectural_Museum_of_Art\">Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But after the Tsunami \/ Nuclear Power Plants accidents in 2011, they decided not show the painting, because the painting is too grotesque.<\/p>\n<p>And American Museums refused to send Ben Shahn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s paintings to this museum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Exhibition, because they are afraid paintings might get damage from polluted air from the Nuclear Power Plants\u00c2\u00a0accident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After I looked at his works I realized that I have never seen his paintings before besides the one I painted.<\/p>\n<p>I love this painting &#8220;Ben shahn &amp; a Woman&#8221;. The way came out is just right.
