Autumn in Fog&#8221; Oil painting by Mariko Irie<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This scene is in Santa Rosa along my morning walk.<\/p>\n<p>It stirred\u00c2\u00a0a\u00c2\u00a0vague\u00c2\u00a0nostalgia\u00c2\u00a0in me.<\/p>\n<p>I feel that I have seen this scene long, long time ago in Japan or in my dream.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s beautiful, isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I just watched the movie \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Local color\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, directed and written by George Gallo.<\/p>\n<p>The movie recalls my High school and Art university period, which was Modernism in Japanese Art world.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Modernism explicitly <b>rejects the ideology of\u00c2\u00a0<\/b><a title=\"Realism (arts)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Realism_(arts)\"><b>realism<\/b><\/a><b>\u00c2\u00a0<\/b>and makes use of the works of the past through the application of reprise, incorporation, rewriting, recapitulation, revision and parody in new forms.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this movie the art dealer was talking about art: exactly what professors were teaching us when I was a student of Musashino Art University in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Modernism, especially Dadaism, Nonsense took over Japanese art world. I was sad like this impressionist painter in this movie. That was one of the reasons; I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t go to a painting major. My major was a space design. It was good for me. We had to study everything including painting, designing, sculpturing, lighting\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. And freshman year we had to take drawing class all morning 6 days a week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I moved to Mendocino CA in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>I was inspired the beauty of nature. I told myself, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t create better than nature does. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like to copy the beauty of nature through me.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc90s, I have red an article about Art in Japanese magazine: The artist said \u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m happy to say that finally we can say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Beautiful\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in art.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very strange to us now. But that was true.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have been so happy that I can paint beauty since I moved to Mendocino.
